BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's basketball team remained undefeated with a come-from-behind 75-66 victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon in the Chuck Randall Classic at Whatcom Pavilion.
WWU improved to 4-0 on the season with the victory, out-scoring the Sunbirds 42-32 in the second half. FPU falls to 0-4 on the season.
The Vikings trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the first half, but battled back to trail by one at the half (34-33). WWU then used a big second-half surge pulling away from a 42-42 tie by going on a 16-6 run over a six-minute span.
"We were not at our best offensively today, and you have to give Fresno Pacific credit for playing hard and making a lot of shots early," said head coach Tony Dominguez. "I am proud of the way the guys battled back and were mentally tough to fight back like they did. Sometimes an 11-point deficit can easily turn into 20 points, but the team reacted positively to being down."
Senior forward Jeffrey Parker (Richmond, CA/Salesian) led Western with 21 points shooting 6-for-14 from the field and redshirt freshman Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) had 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field.
Sophomore guard Trey Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) added 14 points and 4 assists, and senior guard Taylor Stafford (Chicago, IL/Evansville) had 12 points with 4 assists. Sophomore center Logan Schilder (Bellingham, WA/Whatcom CC) recorded 5 blocked shots and had a team-high 7 rebounds.
Fresno Pacific senior Spencer Krannitz scored a career-high 31 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field (4-for-7 3-pointers).
The Vikings trailed at the half by one point at 34-33, despite being down by as many as 11 points midway through the half at 30-19. WWU ended the half on a 14-4 run over the final seven minutes of the half. Parker (10 points) and Drechsel (9 points) led the Vikings who were 13-for-31 from the field.
The game was tied 42-42 after a Fresno Pacific 3-pointer at the 13:39 mark. WWU responded with a 16-6 run over the next six minutes to grow the lead to 11 points at 59-48. The Sunbirds would come to within 5 points at 71-66 with 1:14 remaining, but WWU put the game away with a Hommes jumper and a pair of Stafford free throws.
The Vikings look to continue the perfect start to the season wrapping up the Chuck Randall Classic with a 5:30 pm game vs. Quest. Alaska will play Fresno Pacific in the earlier game at 3 pm at Whatcom Pavilion.
Chuck Randall Classic: The University of Alaska opened the Chuck Randall Classic with a 101-56 victory over Quest. The Nanooks have five players reach double-digits in scoring led by 18 points from Brandon Davis on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. UAF shot 57.1% from the field (44-for-77).
