Vikings Cruise By Quest 102-61

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Jeffrey Parker scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead a balanced offense as Western Washington remained unbeaten, rolling to a 102-61 victory against Quest on Sunday evening in the Chuck Randall Classic at Whatcom Pavilion.

The Vikings improved to 5-0 overall, going 2-0 at the Chuck Randall Classic after a victory against Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon. Quest dropped to 3-5 on the season, finishing 0-2 at the tournament with losses to the Vikings and the University of Alaska.

Parker (Sr., F, Richmond, CA/Salesian) scored his 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting and also added 4 assists. He was one of six Vikings to finish in double figures scoring and every WWU player scored in the contest.

Sophomore guard Trey Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) contributed 16 points and 5 assists while senior guard Taylor Stafford (Chicago, IL/Evansville) added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Redshirt freshman forward Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) contributed 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists while sophomore center Logan Schilder (Bellingham, WA/Whatcom CC) had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Junior guard Brett Kingma (Mill Creek, WA/Oregon) added 10 points.

A back-and-forth start to the game featured six lead changes and three ties over the first 10 minutes of the first half before WWU put together a dominant performance during the latter portion of the half to take a 47-26 lead to halftime.

The Vikings jumped to a 5-0 advantage to open the game behind a three-pointer and layup from Hommes. The Kermodes countered to tie the game 7-7 and neither team led by more than 3 points until WWU went on its big run to close the half.

The final lead of the game for Quest came at 20-19 on a three-pointer by Noah DeRappard-Yuswack with 10:40 to go in the first half. WWU answered with a 13-0 run, featuring consecutive three-pointers from Drechsel and Parker, to take a 32-20 lead with 6:59 to play. The 13-0 spurt was part of a larger 28-6 run over the final 10:29 of the first half en route to the commanding halftime advantage.

WWU continued to pull away over the second half, leading by no fewer than 23 points during the half and shooting a blistering 70% (21-for-30) from the floor after halftime. The Vikings outscored Quest 55-35 during the second half.

For the game, WWU shot 60% from the field (39-for-65) and shot a season-best 57.1% (12-for-21) from three-point range. At the free throw line, WWU went 12-for-14 (85.7%), also a season-high performance. Defensively, WWU held Quest to 34.7% (25-for-72) from the field.

DeRappard-Yuswack finished with 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting to lead the Kermodes while Theo VandenEkart added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Dallas Searles paced Quest during the first half, scoring all 15 of his points before halftime.

Parker earned tournament MVP honors, averaging 22.5 points per game, 7 rebounds per game and 3 assists per game during the weekend. Hommes was also an all-tournament team selection, scoring 15.5 points per game to go along with 7 rebounds per game and 3.5 assist per game.

WWU plays next on December 1, beginning the GNAC schedule at Saint Martin's (7 pm). The Vikings travel to Seattle Pacific on December 3 at 7 pm before returning to the non-conference schedule on December 12 with a game at UC San Diego (7 pm).

Chuck Randall Classic: The University of Alaska concluded the tournament 2-0, topping Fresno Pacific 74-58 in Sunday's early game. The Nanooks surged to an early 12-4 lead before the Sunbirds closed to within 14-9. But that was as close as Fresno Pacific would come all game, as Alaska answered with a 7-0 run and never led by fewer than 8 points the rest of the way. Fresno Pacific reduced the lead to 8 points at 59-51 with 5:13 to play in the second half but could not cut into the deficit any further as Alaska finished strong. The Nanooks had five players reach double digits in scoring, led by 18 points from Brandon Davis on 7-for-12 shooting from the field.

Game Notes:Jeffrey Parker now has 1,489 points in 95 career games and moved into 7th on the WWU all-time scoring list, passing John Allen (2010-13)...Parker leads WWU averaging 22.8 points through the first five games...Every WWU player scored in Sunday's contest.
