SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior forward Jeffrey Parker scored a game-high 28 points to nearly lead Western Washington to an upset of the University of Washington in a fast-paced 109-103 exhibition loss Thursday evening at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Parker (Richmond, CA/Salesian) was 8-for-23 from the field, including 4-for-11 from three-point range. The senior scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half and the Vikings made a run at the Division I Huskies.
"I am excited about our guys intensity, character and the will to succeed," said fifth-year head coach Tony Dominguez. "They battled out there and gave a very good team a good run. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am proud of how they played tonight."
Senior point guard Taylor Stafford (Chicago, IL/Evansville) added 23 points on 6-for-19 shooting, going 3-for-8 from three-point range and 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
Also scoring in double-digits for the Vikings were redshirt freshman Daulton Hommes (14 points), sophomore forward Trey Drechsel (13 points, 6 rebounds) and junior guard Brett Kingma (11 points).
WWU shot 40.5% from the field (30-for-74), compared to the Huskies 53.2% (33-for-62). UW had a sizeable advantage out-rebounding WWU 51-29.
"I think the difference in the game came down to the rebounding advantage in the first half," said Dominguez. "We did a better job in the second half, but they did a pretty good job in that department against us."
The Huskies had six players reach double-digits in scoring, led by 25 points from Dominic Green (7-for-13 shooting) and 23 points from guard David Crisp (13-for-15 free throws). Markelle Fultz, one of the nation's top freshman players, scored 14 points on 4-for-10 shooting.
The evenly matched game featured 12 tie scores and 12 lead changes. WWU held a three-point lead at 87-84 with 4:21 remaining in the game, but UW answered with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good.
WWU will play Seattle University in a closed-door scrimmage on Sunday and then officially open the 2016-17 season November 11 vs. Sonoma State at the Pioneer Challenge in Hayward, California.
