LIVERMORE, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's golf team holds the 36-hole lead after the first day of the East/West Bay Area Invite at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, Calif.
The Vikings top 4 scorers (out of 5 players) combined for a two-round score of 606 (+30) on the Par 72 course. WWU heads into tomorrow's final round with a 5-shot lead over second place Saint Martin's (611, +35) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (611, +35).
"I thought Brett (Johnson) and Chris (Hatch) played solid in the morning, and it was nice to see Jeff (Marcum) step up with a nice round in the afternoon," said head coach Luke Bennett. "
Junior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) is tied for 3rd in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 149 (+5). Johnson was in 2nd place after the morning round after carding a 1-under 71, and shot a 6-over-par 78 in the afternoon.
Junior Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) was the first-round leader with a 2-under-par 70, but slipped to a tie for 10th overall after carding a 10-over 82 in the afternoon.
Junior Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) recorded the Vikings best afternoon round with an even-par 72, and is tied for 7th overall at 6-over-par 150.
The two-day tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes tomorrow. The tournament is hosted by Academy of Art University and features 11 schools. Live scoring for the 54-hole tournament will be conducted through GolfStat.
