COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho -- The Western Washington University men's golf team turned in a dominating performance leading wire-to-wire to take home the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference team championship held Monday-Tuesday at Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.
The Vikings claimed their seventh overall GNAC Championship (out of 9) and returned to the top of the conference standings after a two-year hiatus. WWU finished the 54-hole tournament at 15-under-par, tying the tournament record with a three-round total of 837. WWU dominated the field with an 18-stroke advantage over 2nd-place Concordia (+3, 855).
"It was a great two days of golf for the Vikings with near perfect weather and course conditions," said head coach Luke Bennett. "The team played extremely solid from the start and didn't let down. Every player turned in at least one round below par, which is a great achievement for the team."
Junior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) took home individual medalist honors with a tournament record 203 (-10). Johnson fired a 5-under-par 66 in Tuesday's final round, after setting the GNAC single-round record with a 7-under-par 64 in the first round. Johnson held a four-stroke advantage over Austin Spicer of Saint Martin's. Johnson led all players with 17 birdies in the 54-hole tournament.
"Everything was clicking for Brett -- he drove the ball extremely well and was solid on the greens," added Bennett. "Everything came together for him this week. He has had a great season and it was nice to see him stay mentally strong and win the tournament."
Western dominated the field placing three players in the top six. In addition to Johnson's record-breaking performance, junior Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) tied for 3rd at 5-under-par (208) and freshman Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline/IMG Academy) moved into a tie for 6th place (-3, 210) following his final-round 67.
The Vikings will find out if they advance to the NCAA II Regionals this Friday when the selection show airs at 3 pm on NCAA.com. The NCAA II West Regional will be held May 2-3 in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the NMSU Golf Course.
