LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western Washington University men's golf team posted one of the best rounds of the day with a 3-over-par 287 to move up to 17th place at the 2016 NCAA Championships West/South Central Regional at University Golf Course.
The Vikings moved up two spots from 19th to 17th, improving by 21 strokes from the first-round 308 posted on Monday. WWU is now just 8 strokes back of the top 10 in the 20-team field and 14 strokes back of the top 3 which would qualify them for the NCAA II National Championships.
Juniors Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) continues to lead the Vikings with a two-round total of 4-over-par 76. Hatch posted a 1-under-par 70 in the second round, carding 4 birdies and 3 bogeys en route to his ninth round of par or better this season.
Junior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) and freshman Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) were each 1-over-par Tuesday with matching scores of 72, and junior Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) turned in a 2-over-par 73. All five WWU players improved from their first round score, including four players with at least a four-stroke improvement. Johnson is tied for 42nd in the 108-player field and leads the field with a 1-under-par average on the course's par 3 holes.
"We played a lot more like we are capable and made some nice adjustments from yesterday," said head coach Luke Bennett. "We can build off our performance today and hopefully take that into tomorrow's round."
Oklahoma Christian continues to lead the tournament with a 36-hole score of 4-over-par 572. Chico State is one stroke back after posting the round's best score at 3-under-par (281) and Cal State Monterey Bay and BYU Hawai'i are tied for 3rd at 13-over-par (581).
Josh Aguilar of Dallas Baptist holds the individual lead at 3-under-par after shooting even par today.
The regional tournament concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes. Live results can be follow via GolfStat.com. The Vikings are scheduled to start teeing off at 8:20 am MT off the 10th tee at University Golf Course on the New Mexico State University campus.
