May 4, 2016 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western Washington University men's golf team had its season come to an end finishing in 18th place at the 2016 NCAA Championships West/South Central Regional at University Golf Course.
The Vikings turned in a final round score of 18-over-par 302 and finished the 54-hole tournament at 45 over par (897). WWU moved up to 17th after Tuesday's second round posting a 3-over-par 287, but couldn't carry the momentum into today's final round. The Vikings trip to the NCAA II Regional was their 18th consecutive, continuing a string that has seen the program advance to the postseason every season since joining the Division II level.
Junior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) and freshman Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) tied for 44th place with three-round scores of 223 (+10). Junior Chris Hatch shot a 225 (T63rd), followed by junior Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) at 227 (T78th) and freshman Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) at 234 (T100th).
Chico State won the Super Regional posting a three-round total of even-par 852, including a final-round 5-under-par 279. Oklahoma Christian (+6, 858), Dallas Baptist (+15, 867), California Baptist (+17, 869) and BYU Hawai'i (+20, 872) all punched their tickets to the NCAA II National Championships May 17-21 at Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colorado.
Sam Johnston of Oklahoma Christian won individual medalist honors finishing the tournament at 7-under par (206).
