BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's soccer team closed out its preseason with a 3-1 victory over the University of Puget Sound Saturday evening in an exhibition match at Harrington Field.
The Vikings (2-0 in preseason) jumped out to the early lead on a quick goal by junior Luke Olney (Enumclaw, WA) at the 5:18 mark. Junior Drew Barker (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) broke free inside the box and dumped a pass off to Olney who drove it past the UPS keeper at 12-yards out for the goal. Barker and senior Eleazar Galvan (Chelan, WA/Skagit Valley College) were credited with assists on the goal.
Junior Anthony Dean (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Bellevue College) put the Vikings up 2-0 at the 20:28 mark as he broke free 20 yards out and slotted it under the keeper from 16-yards out.
Galvan extended the lead to 3-0 at 24:23 beating the keeper inside the far post from 8-yards out off an assist by Galvan.
The Loggers had their best scoring chance late in the first half when Ari Taublieb intercepted a clearance and fired a shot at the goal. Western keeper Tyler Visten (Mount Vernon, WA/Skagit Valley College) punched the ball away for the save to keep the clean sheet for the Vikings.
UPS got on the scoreboard early in the second half on a goal by Ben Whitham at 56:09. Josh Sancio placed a corner kick in the box that Whitham finished from 8-yards out past an out-stretched Visten. The Vikings out-shot the Loggers 9-3 in the second half, but were held off the scoreboard.
WWU finished the preseason 2-0 by outscoring its opponent 5-1. The squad officially opens the season on the road with matches at Chico State (Sept. 1, 7 pm) and Sonoma State (Sept. 3, 5 pm) next week. The Vikings first home match is September 8 vs. Metro State (4 pm) at Harrington Field.
Note: Luke Olney was credited with the game-winning goal coming against his father's team, Reece Olney, who is in his 23rd season as the head coach of the UPS men's soccer program.
