Sept. 12, 2016 First & Second Round Results
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Western Washington University Men's Golf team is in 13th place after the first two rounds (36 holes) of the season-opening Itani Quality Homes Collegiate played Monday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The 14-team field consists primarily of NCAA Division I teams, with the exception of the Vikings (Division II) and the University of British Columbia. Tournament host Washington State is in first place after the first two rounds firing a 6-under-par 562 on its home course.
Western recorded a 36-hole team total of 35-over-par 603, with a 19-over 303 in the morning round and a three-stroke improvement 16-over-par 300 in the afternoon. The Palouse Ridge track is playing as a par 71 and 7,308 yards.
"It wasn't the start we were hoping for," said fourth-year head coach Luke Bennett. "The conditions were pretty windy at 20-35 mph, but we all played the same course and there were some good scores out there today. Well regroup and look to finish strong tomorrow."
Senior Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) is WWU's leading individual in a tie for 21st place with a 36-hole score of 4-over-par 146. Hatch, a first-team All-GNAC selection last season, shot a 3-over-par 74 in the morning and followed it up with a 1-over-par round in the afternoon. He recorded 8 birdies combined in the two rounds, 6th-most amongst the 83 players in the tournament.
Seniors Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) and Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) are tied for 46th with matching 36-hole totals of 8-over-par 150 (76 in the morning, 74 in the afternoon).
