BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's basketball team used a strong 56-point second half and a game-high 26 points from sophomore forward Daulton Hommes to defeat Douglas College 108-81 Wednesday night in a non-conference game on WECU Court at Carver Gym. The Vikings improve to 2-1 on the season with the 27-point victory over the Canadian school from New Westminster, BC.
Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) led five Vikings in double-figures scoring his 26 points on 12-for-16 shooting (2-for-3 3-pointers) and added 5 rebounds.
Junior 7-foot center Logan Schilder (Bellingham, WA/Whatcom CC) recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Schilder scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, helping WWU turn a 6-point halftime advantage into a 27-point victory. Senior forward Deandre Dickson (Easton, CA/Bakersfield College) contributed 20 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots, and redshirt junior guard Siaan Rojas (Concord, CA/Santa Rosa College) came off the bench to score 11 points in 14 minutes of action. Sophomore Trevor Jasinsky (Camas, WA) added 10 points and junior guard Trey Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) recorded a career-high 10 assists. Overall the Vikings shot 55.4% from the field (46-for-83), including 54.8% accuracy (23-for-42) in the second half.
Douglas had four players reach double figures, led by 16 points from Reese Morris and 15 from Kameron Johnson.
The Vikings held off a late Douglas rally to take a six-point lead into halftime at 52-46. WWU led by as many as 16 points at 25-11 at the 13:44 mark, but the Royals fought back using a 15-2 run to pull ahead at 32-31. Hommes scored a pair of quick baskets to put the Vikings back in front, where they stayed for the rest of the half, out-scoring Douglas 21-24 to finish the half. Hommes and Dickson each scored 18 points, with Drechsel contributing 7 assists. Johnson led the Royals with 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting, who as a team were 18-for-38 from the field (47.4%) and 6-for-15 from 3-point range (40.0%).
Western opened the second half going on an 8-0 run to build the lead back up to double-digits at 60-46, and cruised to the victory by leading by at least 10 points the rest of the way. Schilder scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, and grabbed 8 rebounds. Rojas scored 9 of his 11 points and senior guard Brad Wallace (Lacey, WA/River Ridge/Eastern Washington) had 8 points on 3-for-5 shooting. The Vikings (2-1) are off this weekend and return to action over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend hosting UC San Diego, Capilano and Alaska Fairbanks for the annual Chuck Randall Classic. WWU will face UCSD on Friday (11/24) at 7:30 pm and then take on Capilano on Saturday (11/25) at 5 pm.
