BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Led by six players scoring in double digits and a dominating first half, the Western Washington University men's basketball team cruised to a 113-60 victory over Capilano University Saturday evening in the final game of the Chuck Randall Classic on WECU Court at Carver Gym.
The Vikings improved to 3-2 on the season with their second 100-point performance of the season, now turning their attention to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play where they look to defend their league title beginning next week.
"We focused on our passing and rebounding today, and we hit our benchmarks in those stats tonight and had a good all-around performance," said WWU head coach Tony Dominguez. "This was a big game for us to get our rhythm back on offense and have good focus mentally. I felt like we did a nice job of bouncing back from last night."
Junior 7-foot center Logan Schilder (Bellingham, WA/Whatcom CC) recorded a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double in 21 minutes, already his third double-double of the season. He also added a game-high 3 blocked shots.
Sophomore forward Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) led the Vikings with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting, also adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Senior forward Deandre Dickson (Easton, CA/Bakersfield College) was 6-for-7 from the field in his 15-point performance.
Also reaching double-digits in scoring were sophomore guard Trevor Jasinsky (15 points, 5-for-9 FG), senior guard Brad Wallace (13 points, 5-for-5 FG) and senior guard Brett Kingma (10 points, 4-for-8 FG, 4 steals).
Overall the Vikings shot a season-high 60.0% from the field (42-for-70), and knocked down 7 of 21 3-point field goal attempts.
Capilano guard Denver Sparks-Guest scored 17 points to lead the Blues, finishing the with a tournament-high 41 points in the two games.
The Vikings took control of the game midway through the first half, pulling away from a 19-18 game by going on a 22-2 run over a five-minute stretch. WWU completed the half scoring 40 of the final 52 points to take a 59-30 lead into halftime. Hommes led the Vikings with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting (2-for-3 3-pointers) and Dickson also reached double-digits with 11 points going 4-for-5 from the floor. Schilder nearly reached his double-double in the first half with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
WWU didn't let up after the half, out-scoring Capilano 54-30 over the final 20 minutes to seal the victory. Wallace scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to lead the Vikings, while Jasinsky (8 points) and Kingma (7 points) also contributed key minutes.
The Vikings (3-2) begin defense of their Great Northwest Athletic Conference title next week hosting Concordia on Thursday and Western Oregon on Saturday at Carver Gym. Both games start at 7 pm on WECU Court on the WWU campus and will be streamed live online via WWUVikings.com/Live with Doug Lange calling the action courtside.
Game Notes: Daulton Hommes and Deandre Dickson were named to the Chuck Randall Classic All-Tournament team...WWU's 60.0% field goal percentage marked the first time to shoot 60.0% or better in a game since Nov. 27, 2016 vs. Quest (60.0%, 39-for-65).
UC San Diego 80, Alaska Fairbanks 56 [Box Score]:
The UC San Diego Tritons completed a perfect trip to Bellingham with an 80-56 win over Alaska Fairbanks Saturday afternoon at Carver Gym to complete the Chuck Randall Classic 2-0.
Scott Everman led all players with 24 points off the bench, going 8-for-16 from the field while connecting on seven 3-pointers. Guard Christian Bayne added 16 points and Anthony Ballestero had 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting (5-for-7 3-pointers).
UCSD shot 51.7% from the field (31-for-60), including 16-for-34 from 3-point range, against the Nanooks, capping a tournament that saw them shoot 52.8% overall (60-for-108) and hit 26 of 53 3-point attempts (49.1%).
Alaska was led by 19 points from forward Michael Kluting (8-for-13 FG) and 13 points from Joe Lendway.
