CORONA, Calif. - Three Western Washington University golfers placed in the top 10 to lead the Vikings men's golf team to a fourth place finish at The Battle at Eagle Glen played Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Glen Golf Club.
WWU continued its solid start to the spring season with its second top four finish in a tournament in a row, finishing near the top of the 19-team tournament field. The Vikings carded a 54-hole score of 20-over-par 884, turning in rounds of 297, 293 and 294. BYU Hawai'i led wire-to-wire to take home the team title finishing at 1-over-par (865) for a 12-stroke margin of victory.
Seniors Jeffrey Marcum (T4th, +2), Brett Johnson (T8th, +3) and Chris Hatch (T8th, +3) led the Western contingent all placing in the top 10 in the 99-player field.
Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) turned in rounds of 70-75-73 for a 54-hole total of 218. He finished 6th in the tournament field with 39 pars. In his two spring tournament appearances, Marcum has turned in a pair of top 10 finishes, backing up his T6th-place finish at the Visit Stockton Cactus Thaw! February 13-14.
Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) played bogey-free in the final round, turning in a 2-under-par 70 to move up from a tie for 22nd to start the day top 10 finish. His 2-under-par total on Tuesday was tied for the 6th-best in the final round of the tournament. He led all players in the tournament with 42 pars.
Johnson (Ridgefield, WA) notched his fifth top 25 finish of the season and third in the top 10. After shooting an opening-round 76 (+4), Johnson finished the final 36 holes at 1-under-par. His final round included an eagle (hole #5), 3 birdies and 5 bogeys.
"The three seniors led the way again for us today, with all three finishing in the top 10," said head coach Luke Bennett. "Chris (Hatch) played a great round today where he was bogey-free."
Rounding out the Vikings contingent was junior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) finishing in a tie for 37th place (+12, 75-74-79) and freshman Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) in 79th place (+24, 79-80-81).
"The guys patience was once again tested today and putting was a constant struggle," added Bennett. "The guys hung in there and grinded, it is just too bad we gave up a few strokes down the stretch. Overall we competed hard and I feel like we are getting closer to realizing our full potential."
California Baptist Trevor Lampson fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to earn a two-stroke victory over Nicolas Herrera of BYU Hawai'i for individual medalist honors.
The Vikings, ranked No. 32 in the Golfstat rankings, return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California.
