SANTEE, Calif. â€" Led by top 10 finishes by seniors Chris Hatch (4th) and Jeffrey Marcum (T6th), the Western Washington University men's golf team finished in 5th place in the 67th Annual SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego on Tuesday at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
The Vikings recorded their third top 5 finish in three spring tournaments, adding today's 5th-place finish (+3, 894) to T3rd at The Visit Stockton Cactus Thaw! and 4th place at the Cal Baptist Invitational.
WWU posted a final-round score of 10-over-par 298, with Marcum (E, 72), Hatch (+1, 73) and senior Brett Johnson (+1, 73) leading the way.
"Our seniors played solid today," said head coach Luke Bennett. "The conditions were a little tougher today and they showed some great fight."
Western moved up from 6th place to begin the round into 5th place in the 15-team field. Dixie State won the team title at +17 (881) and Colin Prater (Colorado-Colo. Springs) won individual medalist honors at 3-under-par for the tournament (72-68-73=213).
Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) paced the Vikings with his third top 5 finish over the last two seasons. The senior finished at 1-over-par for the 54-hole tournament, tying for 10th in the 74-player field with 9 birdies.
Marcum (Richland, WA/South Mountain CC) continued his dominating spring season with his fourth consecutive top 10 finish. He fired rounds of 74 (+2), 73 (+2) and an even-par 72 today to finish at +3 for the tournament (219). The reigning GNAC co-Player of the Week has finished T6th, T4th and T6th in his three spring tournaments, while turning in a scoring average of 72.00.
Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) bounced back from a tough day on the course Monday to fire a 1-over-par 73 in today's final round, finishing the tournament in a tie for 54th.
The Vikings return to action next week (April 3-4) at the Mustang Intercollegiate hosted by Western New Mexico University at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona. It will be the last regular-season tournament for the Vikings prior to competing in the GNAC Championships April 24-25 at Coeur d'Alene Resort in Idaho.
