GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Western Washington University men's golf team is in 4th place after the first two rounds of the 20-team field of the Mustang Intercollegiate hosted Monday and Tuesday by Western New Mexico University at Palm Valley Golf Club.

The Vikings completed Monday's first and second rounds (36 holes) of the 54-hole tournament at 3-under-par (573). WWU completed the first 18 holes at even par 288, then posted an afternoon round of 3-under-par 285. They are one stroke back of 3rd-place Colorado Mines (-4, 572) and 7 strokes back of first place BYU Hawai'i (-10, 566) for the tournament lead.

"When the weather got tougher these guys buckled down," said head coach Luke Bennett. "They played solid this afternoon in windy conditions. The seniors really played solid over the final holes. Shooting even par or better as a tm is always good!"

WWU finished the first round in a tie for 8th place at even-par 288, but improved 3 strokes to move up to 4th place after the second round.

Senior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA/Oregon State) is tied for 6th in the 104-player field posting a 3-under-par 141 for the first two rounds. The Senior fired an even-par 72 on the 7,015 course in the morning round, and then notched his 9th career round in the 60's with a 3-under-par 69 in the afternoon round. He trails individual medalist leader Adam Stone of Cal State East Bay (-8, 136) by 5 strokes.

Senior Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA) is tied for 9th place at 2-under-par 142, posting rounds of 73 (+1) and 69 (-3) on Monday. Marcum has finished T6th (The Cactus Thaw!), T4th (Cal Baptist Invitational) and T6th (SoCal Intercollegiate) in his three starts so far this spring.

Senior Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) posted consecutive even-par rounds of 72 on the 7,015 layout to tie for 24th place.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 am.
