Windermere Cup Results

SEATTLE, Wash. - The top-ranked NCAA Division II Western Washington University women's rowing team competed against the nation's top Division I rowing program on Saturday at the prestigious Windermere Cup Regatta hosted by the University of Washington.

WWU launched three crews in the annual spring rowing event that celebrates the beginning of boating season in Seattle and the Northwest. The Vikings (NCAA Division II) and Huskies (NCAA Division I) are both ranked No. 1 in the nation in the CRCA/US Rowing national polls in their respective divisions.

"I thought we raced pretty well today," said 19th-year head coach John Fuchs. "It's a great spectacle and show put on by Windermere and UW. It's hard to keep up with the number one program in the country, but I am sure the team will remember today forever. We appreciate getting the invitation here and look forward to coming back next year."

The Vikings competed in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ finishing in 2nd place behind UW, and finished well ahead of 3rd-place Seattle University.

In one of the marquee events of the regatta, WWU's Varsity 8+ went head-to-head against the Huskies in the Erickson Cascade Cup. WWU completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:49.437, 19-seconds back of the top-ranked Huskies.

The Vikings are ranked No. 1 in the nation in this week's CRCA/US Rowing Division II poll and hold the top spot in the NCAA II West Region in the eight, four and overall team categories. WWU will now wait for the NCAA selection show that will be held Monday, May 15 at 2 pm PT via NCAA.com where the Vikings are a near lock to row for the national championship May 26-28 on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ. WWU is the seven-time NCAA II National Champion (2005-2011) and national runner-up three times dating back to the inaugural Division II regatta in 2002. The Vikings finished 3rd at last year's NCAA II Championships.
