SPOKANE, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Whitworth University in the second exhibition game of the preseason for the Vikings on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Senior forward Anthony Dean (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Bellevue College) scored twice for the Vikings in the win. His first goal came via a free kick while the second goal was assisted by sophomore forward Nick Phillips (Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner).

The win over Whitworth on Sunday completed a weekend road trip to Spokane for the Vikings. WWU was defeated 5-1 by Gonzaga on Friday before earning the victory over Whitworth on Sunday. As preseason exhibition games, neither contest counted toward the official 2017 season statistics or record and there were no official box scores.

Prior to Sunday's matchup, WWU and Whitworth most recently played in 2015 during an exhibition in Bellingham. The Vikings and Pirates battled to a 1-1 tie at Harrington Field in the last meeting.

The third and final exhibition game of the 2017 preseason for WWU will be against the University of Puget Sound next Saturday (Aug. 26) at Harrington Field (7 pm). WWU will open the regular season at home with games against Sonoma State (Aug. 31, 7 pm) and Chico State (Sept. 2, 12 pm)
