Vikings Hold Lead at Saint Martin's Golf Invitational

OLYMPIA, Wash. â€" The Western Washington University men's golf team came out of the gates with a red-hot start to the 2017-18 season, finishing the first and second round of the Saint Martin's Invitational with a 6-stroke lead over the 13-team field after the first 36 holes of the two-day tournament played at Olympia Country & Golf Club.
The Vikings, ranked No. 24 in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Preseason Coaches Poll, came out with a morning team round of 1-under-par 283 and backed that score up with an even-par 284 in the afternoon 18 on the par 71 layout. WWU leads the 13-team field by 6 strokes, with GNAC foe Simon Fraser in 2nd place at 5-over-par 573 and the University of Victoria in 3rd place (+9, 577).
"We have been waiting to get into competition and the guys showed they were ready for all 36 holes today," said 5th-year head coach Luke Bennett, the back-to-back GNAC Coach of the Year. "They all had great individual efforts, which led to a great day for the Vikings to open the 2017-18 season."
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) is tied for 2nd in the 72-player field, turning in a 36-hole score of 3-under-par 139. Butler started the day with a blistering 4-under-par 67, and was 1-over-par (72) in the afternoon round.
Freshman Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) made his collegiate debut a memorable one, firing rounds of 71 (E) and 69 (-2) to tie for 4th place with a 2-under-par 140.
Overall the Vikings had four players fall in the top 20, with senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) tied for 11th (+2, 144) and junior Cody Roth tied for 19th (+4, 146). Junior Nick Sparling (Dublin, OH/Ohio State) is just off the top 20 in a tie for 27th place (+6, 148).
Andrew Harrison of the University of British Columbia leads field with rounds of 69 (-2) and 68 (-3) for a 5-under-par 137.
The final round of the tournament concludes Saturday with the Vikings beginning to tee off in the final pairings starting at 12:10 pm. Final results will be posted on WWUVikings.com at the conclusion of the round.
The Vikings will have a quick turnaround hosting the 46th Annual WWU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. The 16-team, 93-player field will have a shotgun start for the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament Monday morning at 8:30 am. Live scoring will be provided via Golfstat.com.
