Vikings Open Season with Victory at SMU Invite

Sept. 23, 2017

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's golf team recorded a five-stroke team victory in the season-opening Saint Martin's Invitational played Friday and Saturday at Olympia Country & Golf Club.

The Vikings, ranked 24th (tied) in the preseason Bushnell Golfweek Division II Preseason Poll, recorded a 54-hole team score of 4-over-par 856 on the par 71, 6,300-yard layout. WWU was 5-over-par today (289), after entering the day at -1 for the tournament.

"It was a true team effort, from start to finish," said 5th-year head coach Luke Bennett. "They played solid, and each of them had to grind it out at some point during their round, but they did a great job to start the season on a very high note. It was a lot of fun to watch."

WWU had three players inside the top 10 of the 72-player field, with freshman Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) leading the way with a 4th-place finish. Andrews, who tied for 5th in the 2017 3A WIAA State Tournament, finished the tournament at 1-under-par 212. He fired rounds of 71 (E), 69 (-2) and 72 (+1) to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) finished 6th at 1-over-par (67-72-75=214) and junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) tied for 7th at 2-over-par (76-70-69=215). Roth's final round 2-under-par 69 was the third-best score of the final round, moving up 12 spots on the leaderboard.

Senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) and junior Nick Sparling (Dublin, OH/Ohio State) tied for 26th place at 8-over-par 221.

The Vikings finished with a 5-stroke victory over Victoria (+9, 861), and were 10 strokes better than 3rd-place Simon Fraser (+14, 866) and Colorado Christian. British Columbia rounded out the top 5 at 18-over-par (870).

Andrew Harrison of the University of British Columbia won individual medalist honors finishing the two-day tournament at 9-under-par (204) with rounds of 69-68-67. He outdistanced the field earning a 6-stroke victory over 2nd-place Lawren Roe of Victoria (-3, 210).

The Vikings will have a quick turnaround hosting the 46th Annual WWU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. The 16-team, 93-player field will have a shotgun start for the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament Monday morning at 8:30 am. Live scoring will be provided via Golfstat.com.
