Vikings Open GNAC Play With Road Win

WWU wins fifth straight game behind 24-point effort from Trevor Jasinsky

PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Washington University junior forward Trevor Jasinsky returned to his old stomping grounds and led the Vikings to an 83-66 victory over Concordia on Thursday night in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams on LCEF Court.

 

Jasinsky grew up in nearby Camas, Washington, just over the Columbia River from the Concordia campus, and led all players with 24 points in the 17-point victory for the 15th-ranked Vikings.

 

WWU won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 6-1 overall and is off to a 1-0 start in GNAC play.

 

Jasinsky scored his game-high 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range. The junior is now five 3-pointers away from 100 in his career and continues to lead the conference in scoring averaging 20.1 points per game through the first seven contests of the season.

 

Redshirt junior guard Micah Winn (Los Angeles, CA/Cerritos College) added 19 points on 7-for-17 shooting and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

 

Senior point guard Tyler Payne (Long Beach, CA/Cerritos College) filled up the stat sheet with 9 points and set career-highs with 6 assists and 9 rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Leif Anderson (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) and sophomore forward Luke Lovelady (Tacoma, WA/Life Christian/Point Loma) each had 8 points. 

 

The Cavaliers (3-4, 0-1 GNAC) were led by 19 points from senior guard Jarrett Gray and 13 points from junior guard Xavier Smith.

 

FIRST HALF SURGE

The Vikings built an 8-point lead at 21-13 with 11:01 remaining in the first half, but Concordia went on a 8-2 run to pull to within one basket at 23-21 at the 9:02 mark. The Vikings answered with a game-changing 15-2 run to grow the lead to 15 points at 38-23. WWU ended the first half on a 28-13 run to take a 15-point lead into the break leading 51-36. Micah Winn (4-8 FG) and Trevor Jasinsky (5-8 FG) lead the Vikings with 13 points each in the first half. 

 

SECOND HALF

WWU grew the lead to 17 points at 63-46 with 13:02 remaining in the game, but Concordia answered with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 11 points with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Cavaliers cut the deficit to 10 points at the 8:35 mark, but back-to-back baskets by Jalen Green and Cameron Retherford extended the lead back to 14 points at 69-55. A 3-pointer by Tyler Payne put the Vikings up by 17 points at 72-55 and Retherford put an exclamation point on a 9-0 run with a dunk to extend the lead to 19 points.

GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

WWU will serve as the host for the 2019 GNAC Championships, with the top six teams in both the men's and women's conference standings at the end of the season qualifying for the tournament that will be held March 7-9 on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

ABOUT WWU BASKETBALL

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, WWU has recorded a 20-win season in eight of the last 10 seasons. WWU is a six-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion and has appeared in the NCAA II Elite 8 three times.
