BELLINGHAM, Wash. - After seven indoor season meets the Western Washington University track & field program will begin the outdoor campaign on Saturday with the Ed Boitano Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound at Baker Stadium.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 am with live results available from Baker Stadium at UPS in Tacoma, Wash. Competitors from GNAC schools Central Washington, Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin's, along with NCAA Division III schools Lewis & Clark, Whitworth and host Puget Sound, compose the field for Saturday.
Excluding the conference meets and the national championships, the Vikings have 14 meets on the 2018 outdoor schedule. The outdoor schedule includes two home meets for WWU in Bellingham at Civic Stadium. The Vikings will host the WWU Quad Meet (April 6) and the WWU Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet (April 28).
The WWU men placed 2nd at the GNAC Outdoor Championships for the second consecutive year last season with the team title coming down to the last event of the meet as the Vikings finished two points shy of the University of Alaska Anchorage. Senior Isaac Derline (Kent, WA/Kentridge) in the 5,000m, junior Alex Barry (Sequim, WA) in the javelin and sophomore Cordell Cummings (Arlington, WA) in the 400m hurdles are returning conference champions for WWU.
Derline, Barry and Cummings are three of five returning Vikings to earn All-GNAC honors (top-3 finish) at the outdoor conference meet last season with senior Brandon Pless (Sedro-Woolley, WA) earning All-GNAC honors in the shot put (2nd) and discus (3rd) while junior Costel David (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen) netted conference honors by finishing 2nd in the javelin. Barry (javelin) and Pless (shot put, discus) were each named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-West Region honorees last season.
The WWU women placed 5th at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in 2017 and tied for 27th at the NCAA Division II Championships, with all points scored at the national championships coming via a second national championship title in the javelin for Bethany Drake during her senior season.
The Vikings return two All-GNAC honorees on the women's side in sophomore Jewels Oliquiano (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) and senior Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur). Oliquiano placed 2nd at the conference championships while Paradee finished 3rd.
Paradee set the conference and school pole vault records last season (4.01m/13-1 ¾) and was named a Second Team USTFCCCA All-America honoree and USTFCCCCA All-West Region performer, placing 11th in the pole vault at the outdoor national championships.

The 2018 indoor season continues for senior Jasmine McMullin (Sequim, WA), who will compete in the triple jump at the indoor national championships held March 9-10 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The WWU men and women each placed 5th at the GNAC Indoor Championships, held Feb. 16-17, with conference titles for McMullin in the triple jump and long jump as well as junior Tupre Wicliff (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen/Clark College) in the high jump. McMullin, who broke conference, conference meet and school records with her winning leap in the triple jump (12.68m/41-7 ¼) at the indoor conference championships, was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet and awarded the Women's Performance of the Meet.
Earlier this week, eight Vikings earned USTFCCCA All-West Region honors for the indoor season and junior J.T. Konrad (Mead, WA/Mount Spokane) was named the GNAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Coming Up: The outdoor season continues with a return trip to the Tacoma area next weekend to compete at the Pacific Lutheran University Open on Saturday, March 10.
