Final Tournament Results
LIVERMORE, Calif. - Western Washington University freshman Brody Bonfilio tied for 1st place at the Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational to help lead the Vikings to a tie for 4th-place finish in the 54-hole tournament that concluded Tuesday at Poppy Ridge Golf Course. Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) carded a 3-over-par 75 in the final round, and birdied his final hole to force a sudden-death playoff with Cal State San Bernardino's Cody Hall. Bonfilio parred the playoff hole, while Hall recorded a birdie to earn individual medalist honors. Overall Bonfilio finished the 54-hole tournament at 1-under-par 215, and tied for the tournament lead with 12 birdies. He opened the tournament with a bogey-free 6-under-par 66, and then shot rounds of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3).
"I am really proud of Brody, for the way he competed and how he finished with a big-time birdie to tie for the tournament lead," said head coach Luke Bennett. "His birdie on the last hole was not only big for him, but really big for the team to move up to 4th place. Very clutch for the young man." Bonfilio becomes the first WWU player to at least share a portion of an individual tournament title during the regular season since Anthony Allen tied for 1st place at the Saint Martin's Invitational Sept. 18-20, 2014.
The Vikings recorded the second-lowest score of the final round at 15-over-par 303, moving into a tie for 4th place in the 10-team field. WWU's three-round total was 42-over-par 906. Cal State San Bernardino won team medalist honors finishing at 19-over-par 883 for a 6-stroke victory over 2nd-place Dixie State.
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) also turned in a solid performance finishing in a tie for 11th place at 8-over-par 224. It marked Butler's fourth top 20 finish this season, and third in three starts this spring. "Michael has been Mr. consistent this season, as it seems he is always in the top 20," added Bennett.
Senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard to record a top-25 finish in 23rd-place, finishing the tournament at 17-over-par 233. Rounding out WWU's starting five were sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) and junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) who both tied for 29th in the 51-player field. In addition to Bonfilio and Hall tying for individual medalist honors, reigning GNAC Player of the Year Chris Crisologo of Simon Fraser tied for 3rd place with Dixie State's Nicklaus Britt finishing at even par for the tournament.
The Vikings take next week off for final exams and return to competition March 26-27 at the SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California.
