March 6, 2018 Final Tournament Results
PLEASANTON, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's golf team tied for 6th place at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay on Monday and Tuesday at The Club at Ruby Hill.
WWU was in 10th place after the first round, moving up four spots with a strong second round (+5, 293) that was completed this morning and a 7-over-par third round this afternoon. Overall the Vikings finished at 31-over-par for the 54-hole tournament (895).
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) and sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) both finished in the top 20 of the 96-player field tying for 16th place at 5-over-par for the tournament (221). Butler finished strong playing his final two rounds at even par (71-73), while Casto recorded WWU's low round of the tournament with a second-round score of 3-uner-par 69. Senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) recorded WWU's score of the final round at 1-under-par 71 (3 birdies, 2 bogeys) and finished in a tie for 39th place at 12-over-par (228) for the tournament. "Adam looked solid all day and his score could have been even lower," said head coach Luke Bennett. Colorado-Colorado Springs won the team title with a 6-over-par 870 for the tournament, including a final round score of 8-under-par 280. Colin Prater won individual medalist honors finishing at 7-under-par (209), including a final-round 68 (-4). He recorded a one stroke victory over Cal State Monterey Bay's Elis Svard (-6, 210).
The Vikings recorded 18 birdies in Tuesday's final round, trailing only tournament champion Colorado-Colorado Springs (22), and led the 17-team field with 46 total birdies in the tournament.
The Vikings return to the Bay Area for a third consecutive week for their next tournament March 12-13 at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif.
