Vikings in 6th Place at Mustang Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Led by 7-under-par performances by junior Cody Roth and freshman Brody Bonfilio, the Western Washington University men's golf team is in 6th place out of 20 teams after the first two rounds of the Mustang Intercollegiate played Monday at Palm Valley Golf Club.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by Western New Mexico University on the par 72, 7,015 Palm Valley Golf Club Course situated 20 miles west of downtown Phoenix.
The Vikings turned in identical team rounds of 4-under-par 284 to finish the first day in 6th place in the 20-team tournament. The Vikings are in the hunt just 4 strokes back of 3rd place Simon Fraser, Dixie State and host Western New Mexico, and 5 strokes back of 2nd-place Colorado Mines. Colorado-Colorado Springs lead the tournament at 18-under-par 558 with 18 holes remaining in the tournament.
Junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) and freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) lead the way for Western in a tie for 5th place in the 108-player field both turning in 7-under-par scores of 137 after 36 holes.
Roth shot a career-low round of 4-under-par 68 in the morning, carding 5 birdies and one bogey. He backed that up with a 3-under-par 69 in the afternoon recording 5 more birdies, and 2 bogeys. Overall he completed the first 36 holes with 10 birdies, tied for 6th-most in the tournament field.
Bonfilio completed his morning round at 3-under par with 5 birdies and 2 bogeys, and then fired a 4-under-par 68 in the afternoon with 4 birdies, one eagle and 2 bogeys. He played the final 10 holes of his afternoon round at 4-under-par, including an eagle on the 525-yard par 5 5th hole.
"Brody and Cody played fantastic today," said head coach Luke Bennett. "Both had very clean days and displayed great course management and execution from start to finish."
Sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) and senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) are tied for 59th at 3-over-par 147, and junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) is tied for 72nd at 5-over-par 149. Senior Willy Scholten (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) is playing as an individual and is at 7-over-par 151 through the first two rounds.
Austin Anderson of Texas-Permian Basin holds the individual lead heading into the final round at 10-under-par 134. Anderson shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and then blistered the course with a 8-under-par 64 in the afternoon round that included 7 birdies and one eagle.
The final round begins Tuesday morning with a 7:30 am shotgun start. The Vikings will begin teeing off on the 2nd (Roth), 3rd (Bonfilio and Casto), 4th (Barker) and 5th holes (Butler).
