BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team had five players score in double-digits and used a decisive 26-0 run early in the second half to record a 22-point victory, 91-69, over Colorado Christian University Friday night in the second game of the Chuck Randall Classic in Carver Gym
The Vikings evened their season record at 3-3 with the lopsided victory over the Cougars (0-5) on WECU Court.
Redshirt freshman point guard D'Angelo Minnis led WWU's five double-figure scorers with a game-high 21 points, connecting on 8-of-12 shots from the field. Minnis added 5 steals, 4 assists and 3 rebounds in the victory.
Senior forward Trevor Jasinsky also filled up the stat sheet with 18 points and 7 rebounds, and tied his career-high with 8 assists.
Also scoring in double-digits for Western were junior forward Luke Lovelady (14 points, 7 rebounds), sophomore guard/forward Jalen Green (12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) and senior guard Tucker Eenigenburg (11 points, 5-for-7 FG).
Overall the Vikings shot a season-best 56.5% from the field, connecting on 39-of-69 shots in game. WWU tied a season high with 7 steals and recorded 17 assists.
Colorado Christian, led by former Seattle Pacific head coach Jeff Hironaka, was led by 20 points from guard Elijah Oliver, all coming in the second half. Senior guard Jake Hornick added 19 points, 17 of which came in the first half. After shooting 15-for-28 (53.6%) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the Cougars were limited to 36.4% (12-for-33) in the second half.
The Vikings out-scored the Cougars 50-32 in the second half, using a game-changing 26-0 run to put the game away early in the second period. WWU shot 57.1% in the second half and were led by 10 points each from Luke Lovelady, D'Angelo Minnis and Trevor Jasinsky.
The Vikings went on a 26-0 run over a nine-minute stretch to begin the second half that stretched a two-point 43-41 lead into a 28-point cushion at 69-41. WWU was 11-for-17 from the field during the run, led by 8 points each from Trevor Jasinsky and D'Angelo Minnis. CCU went 0-for-11 during the dry spell going over 10 minutes without hitting a field goal. Immediately following the Vikings 26-0 run, CCU went on an 11-0 run of its own.
WWU held a four-point 41-37 lead at the half after shooting 55.9% from the field (19-for-34) in the first 20 minutes of play. D'Angelo Minnis led the Vikings with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting and also had 3 steals. Tucker Eenigenburg added 9 points on 4-for-6 shooting and Trevor Jasinsky scored 8 points and grabbed a team-high 4 rebounds.
CCU was led by 17 points from Jake Hornick, who went 8-for-11 from the field and also had 4 steals. The Cougars shot 53.6% from the field (15-for-28).
The Vikings led by as many as seven points, but a last-second 3-pointer by Hornick cut the WWU lead to four points heading into halftime.
The Vikings close out play in the Chuck Randall Classic taking on Langara College in the 7:30 pm game on Saturday. Simon Fraser and Colorado Christian will tip-off at 5:00 pm in the first game of the day. WWU will then have a quick turnaround with a Tuesday game at Simon Fraser at 7:30 pm to open the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season.
SIMON FRASER 111, LANGARA 59
Simon Fraser opened the Chuck Randall Classic with a dominating 111-59 victory over Canadian counterpart Langara College. The Clan had seven players reach double-figures in scoring, led by 19 points from forward Jasdeep Singh and 16 points from guard Othniel Spence. Center Julian Roche neared a double-double with 12 points and 8 rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Langara was led by 16 points from point guard Luka Lizdek.
THE CHUCK RANDALL CLASSIC
The tournament is named after the legendary former WWU coach and basketball pioneer Chuck Randall, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 89. Randall, who coached the Vikings for 18 seasons from 1963 to 1981 and posted a record of 275-186, was named the WWU men's Coach of the Century for 1900 to 1999. He received hall of fame honors from Central Valley High School, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Western and Eastern Washington University.
