Vikings Complete Perfect 6-0 Season With 66-54 Home Win Over Central Washington

Senior Kelsey Rogers completes WWU career with 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team completed a perfect 6-0 season with a 66-54 victory over Central Washington University Saturday night on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

Playing an abbreviated six-game schedule, WWU made the most of its court appearances sweeping home-and-home games against Saint Martin's, Seattle Pacific and Central Washington for the perfect season. The 12-point victory is also win No. 1,050 in 50 years of program history.

On the Senior Night of post player Kelsey Rogers, it was only fitting that the Vikings did most of their damage on the inside, out-scoring the Wildcats 50-20 on baskets made in the paint.

Sophomore post Carley Zaragoza scored a game-high-tying 14 points while shooting 7-for-8 and Rogers capped her career with 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Senior guard Dani Iwami, who will return for another season in 2021-22, scored 10 points (4-for-7 FG) and junior Katrina Gimmaka added 9 points (4-for-7 FG).

The Vikings combined to shoot 48.4% from the field (30-for-62), while holding CWU to a 33.9% mark (19-for-56).

The Wildcats (0-2), who were playing for just the second time this season, were led by 14 points and 9 rebounds from Kassidy Malcolm.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
The Vikings battled back from a slow start that saw CWU get off to an 11-2 lead, going on a 12-2 run to take a one-point 14-13 lead through the 1st quarter. WWU used another long run (14-3) to take a 30-27 into halftime. Dani Iwami and Mollie Olson each scored 5 points on 2-for-6 shooting to lead WWU in scoring, with Avery DykstraKatrina Gimmaka and Carley Zaragoza all contributing 4 points. The Vikings shot 43.3% in the half (13-for-13), while holding CWU to 10-for-28 shooting (35.7).

THE RUN THAT MATTERED
The Vikings pulled away from a two-point, 46-44 lead, going on a 12-2 run that spanned the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarters. The run that spanned over six minutes gave the Vikings a 12-point lead at 58-46, which was sparked by four points each from post players Carley Zaragoza and Kelsey Rogers.

SENIOR NIGHT FOR KELSEY ROGERS
Kelsey Rogers wrapped up her collegiate career with 12 points, giving her 888 in her 94 career games (55 starts) in a Western uniform (9.4 points per game). She finished with a .499 shooting percentage (378-for-757) to rank 16th in program history and with a .777 free throw percentage (129-for-166) is No. 15 in WWU history. She also finished with 88 career blocked shots to tie for 16th-most in program history.

PERFECT WWU SEASONS
This might make for a fun trivia question down the road, but WWU's perfect 6-0 season is the third in program history, joining the 7-0 season by the 1938 football squad and the 14-0-0 ledger by the 1983 women's soccer team. The 2016 NCAA II national championship women's soccer team completed its season with a 24-0-1 record.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THE WILDCATS
The WWU record book shows the Vikings leading the all-time series vs. the Wildcats 97-15, with an 8-5 advantage over the last 13 meetings dating back to the 2015-16 season.

NO FANS IN ATTENDANCE
Following GNAC protocols, there were no fans in attendance for the game inside Carver Gym. All GNAC contests this season featured no spectators, but games were streamed live online.
