Vikings Open Spring with Scoreless Tie vs. PLU

WWU makes 2020/21 debut playing Pacific Lutheran at Harrington Field

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team took the field in official competition for the first time in nearly 500 days, playing Pacific Lutheran University to a 0-0 tie Saturday at Harrington Field.

The Vikings out-shot the Lutes 21-7, with a 6-3 advantage in shots on target, but could not find the back of the net after 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"This game was another step forward for our players and our team," said WWU head coach Travis Connell, in his 18th season leading the women's program and 25th overall at WWU. "I was very encouraged by how our players battled and competed. Competition has often brought the best out our teams and this group looks to be cut from the same cloth."

The WWU sophomore goalkeeper duo Claire Henninger (Sequim, WA) and Abigail Trengove (Folsom, CA/Long Beach State) combined for the 110-minute shutout, with Trengove making three saves.

WWU sophomore forward Estera Levinte (Bothell, WA) led the Vikings with six shots (2 on goal), with sophomore defender Makenzie Burks (Tacoma, WA/Stadium) and senior midfielder Darby Doyle (Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) each recording three shots.

PLU goalkeeper Shaylin Ceasar made six saves while playing all 110 minutes.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Saturday's game vs. PLU will end a stretch of 476 days without the Vikings playing a counting game, dating back to the NCAA II National Championship game vs. Grand Valley State on December 14, 2019 (a 1-0 overtime loss). The Vikings played a pair of non-counting exhibition games last spring, February 29 and April 7, before all athletic competition was halted due to the pandemic.
