Vikings Allow Four Second-Half Goals in Loss at SPU

WWU has 21-game unbeaten streak vs. Seattle Pacific come to an end

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team allowed four unanswered second-half goals in a 4-1 road loss Wednesday night vs. Seattle Pacific University at Interbay Stadium.
 
The loss snapped a 21-game unbeaten streak (17-0-4) for the Vikings against the Falcons, marking the first SPU win over WWU since October 27, 2021, a span of 3,119 days. WWU and SPU played to a 4-4 tie earlier during the spring season in Bellingham.
 
WWU was dealt its first defeat of the abbreviated spring season falling to 3-1-2, while SPU likely concluded its undefeated spring season at 8-0-1. The Falcons scored at least four goals in all nine of their spring contests.
 
The Vikings jumped out to the first-half lead when senior midfielder Grace Eversaul scored in the 28th minute on a strong finish inside the box for her first goal of the spring. Sophomore forward Estera Levinte intercepted a pass deep on the left sideline and weaved her way towards the goal mouth. Her pass was touched by an SPU defender, but Eversaul buried a one-time shot from 7-yards out for the go-ahead goal.
 
SPU equalized in the 56th minute when defender Mariah Alexander knocked home a shot from close quarter in the box off a corner from Ava Giovanola.
 
The Falcons went ahead in the 68th minute on a goal by Claire Neder, and added a pair of insurance goals in the 80th minute by Sophia Chilczuk and a penalty kick goal by Neder in the 85th minute.
 
SPU held a 17-8 advantage in shots during the game, with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal The Falcons also has a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. SEATTLE PACIFIC
The Vikings were defeated by the Falcons for the first time since October 27, 2012, snapping a 21-game unbeaten streak. WWU maintains a 21-19-7 lead in the all-time series. WWU had its 13-game winning streak vs. SPU snapped April 24 in a 4-4 tie. Western was 3-0 vs. Seattle Pacific during the last regular season in 2019.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
WWU (3-1-2) is off this weekend and is scheduled to conclude the abbreviated 2021 spring season on Saturday, May 22 hosting Central Washington University at Harrington Field in Bellingham.
