BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by six players scoring in double-digits, the Western Washington University men's basketball team opened its preseason exhibition schedule with a 95-81 victory over Lincoln University of California on Wednesday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
WWU shot 49.3% as a team going 34-for-69 from the field and connected on 16 three-pointers to defeat the Gary Payton led Oaklanders by 14 points.
Junior transfer
Jonathan Ned (Univ. of Georgia) led the Viking with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard
D'Angelo Minnis added 18 points and dished out seven assists and sophomore guard
Kai Johnson had 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting (3-for-3 3FG).
Also tallying double-digits in scoring were redshirt freshman forward
BJ Kolly (12 pts, 4-for-6 FG, 4 Blk), senior guard
Daniel Hornbuckle (11 pts, 4-for-13 FG, 6 Reb, 5 Ast) and senior shooting guard
Lucas Holden (10 pts, 4-for-5 FG, 2-for-3 3FG, 5 Reb).
WWU led by double-digits for a majority of the game, but cut the deficit to eight points with 9:36 remaining in the game (68-60) following a three-pointer by Jorren Edmonds. The Vikings held off the Oaklanders down the stretch with Johnson scoring 15 of his 17 points in the final eight minutes of the game.
Lincoln was led by a game-high 22 points from Valparaiso transfer guard Goodnews Kpegeol (8 Reb, 4 Ast) and 20 points by guard Donovan Sanor (6-for-11 FG).
