BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team came close to setting the single-game program record for points in a 135-87 victory over Langara College Monday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The Vikings improved to 7-1 on the season with its high-powered offense scoring over 100 points in a game for the third time this season. WWU scored 75 first-half points and fell six points shy of the all-time single-game scoring record of 141 points set in 1989.
WWU featured eight players scoring in double digits and all 12 players that took the court scored at least two points. Junior guard D'Angelo Minnis led the way with 23 points on 9-for-10 shooting, going 5-for-5 from three-point range. Junior forward Darius Gary added 18 points in 17 minutes and senior guard Lucas Holden contributed 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
Sophomore guard Matthew Mayes led the team with seven rebounds to go with a season-high 13 points and junior forward Wyatt Watson had 13 points and five rebounds.
Senior guard Daniel Hornbuckle scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, crossing the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career between WWU, Portland Community College and Alaska Fairbanks.
Overall the Vikings shot 49.0-percent from the field (48-for-98) and made the second-most three-pointers in a game in program history (20-for-47). WWU set the single-game record for three-pointers earlier this season with 21 against Maine Fort Kent.
Langara (Vancouver, BC) scored its 87 points on 36-for-80 shooting (.450), going 7-for-26 from three-point range. Guards Royce Sargeant (7-for-15 FG) and Nicholas Chan (6-for-14 FG) led the Falcons with 16 points each. Jas Dhudwal finished with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Vikings (7-1, 1-0 GNAC) are back in action this weekend with three games in the Hoops in Hawaii Holiday Classic presented by Outrigger Resorts and Hotels. WWU will play non-conference games against Texas Permian Basin (Sat, Dec. 17), Emmanuel College (Sun, Dec. 18) and Hawai'i Pacific (Mon, Dec. 19) at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
