BURNABY, BC – Junior forward Jonathan Ned scored a game-high 21 points to help lead the Western Washington University men's basketball team to a 75-61 victory over Simon Fraser University Saturday evening in West Gym.
The Vikings improved to 6-1 overall by opening Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with the 14-point victory.
Ned recorded his 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting, including going 3-for-5 from three-point range and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
Redshirt freshman BJ Kolly added 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting and senior guard Daniel Hornbuckle scored in double-digits for the sixth time in seven games with 14 points. Junior guard D'Angelo Minnis contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Kai Johnson and sophomore forward Nic Welp tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.
David Penny led three SFU players scoring in double-digits with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Center Victor Radocaj had six of SFU's 13 blocked shots. Simon Fraser fell to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in GNAC play.
The Vikings trailed early in the game 14-7 midway through the low-scoring first half, but turned it on going on a 14-2 run to grab the 21-16 lead and remained in the lead the rest of the way.
The Vikings (6-1) is off next week for final exams and will return to action with a non-conference game hosting Langara College on Monday, December 12 on WECU Court in Carver Gym (7 pm tip-off). The complete 2022-23 WWU men's basketball schedule can be viewed online at wwuvikings.com/MBB.
