BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team concludes a stretch of three road games in six days Tuesday in a rivalry game at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
Tip-off between the Vikings and Wildcats in Nicholson Pavilion is set for 7 pm in a makeup game that was originally scheduled to be played on December 30.
WWU is 11-8 overall and 4-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play heading into another stretch with four games in seven days. Following the contest at CWU, WWU will host home games in Carver Gym on Thursday (Western Oregon), Saturday (Saint Martin's) and Monday (Montana State Billings) – all featuring a 7 pm tip-off on WECU Court on the WWU campus.
After sweeping three consecutive road trips to Alaska, the Vikings were dealt a pair of losses in the 49th state with a pair of matching 81-75 six-point defeats.
The last two months have featured several game postponements, causing for the Vikings to play over half of their conference schedule (10 of 18 games) in the month of February. The three upcoming home games will close out the Carver Gym schedule for 2021-22, with the Vikings owning a 10-2 record in their home venue. Including the Alaska trip and Tuesday's game at CWU, seven of the Vikings final 10 games are on the road.
Although not the final home game of the season, Saturday will serve as Senior Night with
Luke Lovelady,
RJ Secrest and
Dakota Ayala honored before the game against Saint Martin's for their great contributions as WWU student-athletes.
The Vikings are led in scoring by junior guard/forward
Jalen Green, who is averaging 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.23 blocks per game. He was awarded the GNAC Player of the Week honor for games of January 24-30, recording consecutive 25-point performances in wins over Northwest Nazarene and CWU. He was injured 12 minutes into the January 31 home game vs. Alaska Anchorage and did not play in both road games at UAF and UAA last week.
Sophomore point guard
D'Angelo Minnis has strung together three consecutive impressive games, averaging 26.0 points (78 total points) on 26-for-52 shooting in three games last week. He scored a career-high 35 points in the 93-91 overtime victory over UAA.
All games are open to fans following the
WWU Fan Policy with proof of vaccination or a negative medically-administered COVID-19 test within 72 hours shown to gain admission (see policy for age restrictions). Regardless of vaccination status, masks are required inside of Carver Gym for all fans.

THE JALEN EFFECT
WWU leading scorer
Jalen Green is averaging 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game in 13 games (all starts) this season. Green missed both games last week (and the second half in the home win over UAA) with a knee injury. He has missed three GNAC games this season, with WWU going 0-3 in those games while averaging 76.7 points per game. In six GNAC games, Green is averaging 16.2 points per game with the Vikings going 4-2 and averaging 81.7 points per game. The three losses in GNAC play without Jalen have been by a combined 14 points.
NEW GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMAT
The GNAC announced a change to the format and qualifying criteria for its 2022 men's and women's basketball championships. The conference's Management Council and CEO Board unanimously voted to expand this year's tournament to all 10 men's and women's programs. The GNAC Championships will now run from March 2 to 5. To accommodate full fields in both genders, the first two rounds of games will be split between Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Washington, and Seattle Pacific University. In total, six games – two play-in contests and four quarterfinals matchups – will be contested at SPU's Royal Brougham Pavilion. The other 12 games, including the semifinals and championship games in both genders, will be played at Marcus Pavilion on the campus of Saint Martin's, which was awarded tournament-hosting rights two years ago. For each gender, the No. 7 through No. 10 seeds will compete in play-in games on Wednesday, March 2. The winners will advance to an eight-team bracket, which will begin play on Thursday, March 3.
The points rating system is an end-of-season calculation that attaches numeric values to each result based on whether the game was at home or on the road and where each opponent's final conference winning percentage fell (i.e., .750 and above, .500 to .749, .250 to .499 and .249 and below). The better an opponent's final winning percentage, the greater the point values for a win or a loss. It is similar to one of the key metrics used by Division II in ranking teams under consideration for NCAA postseason at-large berths in multiple sports, including men's and women's basketball.
Here is a look at the new rating system heading into games this week:
CLOSE GAMES

The Vikings have had eight games decided by two-or-fewer points this season (5-3 record). Western opened the season with back-to-back one-point losses to Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal State Dominguez Hills and a were on the short end of a two-point 82-80 overtime loss to Simon Fraser. The sophomore guard poured in 21 of his career-high points following halftime. The performance is tied for the 5th-best by a GNAC player this season (T2nd in GNAC games). In three games last week (UAA-UAF-UAA), Minnis scored 78 points for a 26.0 per game average while shooting 26-for-52 (50.0%) from the field. For the season Minnis is averaging 12.4 points and 4.4 assists per game.
