Softball Goes 1-1 at Tournament of Champions

Vikings Fall 4-2 to Sonoma State, Win 10-8 Marathon vs. Holy Names

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Washington University softball team recorded another two-game split during the second day of the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Park.

 

The Vikings dropped a 4-2 contest to Sonoma State in the first game and then overcame deficits of 4-0 and 6-3 to defeat Holy Names 10-8 in the late game. WWU is 2-2 in the 19th Annual Tournament of Champions and 19-15 overall (won 14 of last 18 games).

 

Senior second baseman Chantelle Shimabukuro continued her torrid stretch at the plate extending her hitting streak to 13 consecutive games going 5-for-8 with two doubles on Saturday. Shimabukuro is now batting a team-best .404 (36-for-89) on the season. Senior shortstop Tatum Dow also extended her hitting streak to 10 games with hits in both games and has at least one hit in 32 of 34 games this season.

 

Overall the Vikings recorded 23 hits in the two games, including a season single-game high 18 hits in the 10-8 win over Holy Names.

GAME 1 – SSU 4, WWU 2  Box Score | Scoresheet

 

The Vikings dropped the opening game of the day 4-2 to Sonoma State.

 

The Seawolves scored a pair of runs off WWU starter Joie Baker in the bottom of the 1st inning and held off the Vikings comeback attempt with a complete-game effort from starting pitcher Bailee Reed. 

 

SSU jumped out to the lead on a two-run, two-out double by shortstop Cassidy Romano.

 

The Vikings cut into the two-run deficit with a two-out run-scoring single by Tatum Dow. Rylie Wales drilled a two-out RBI double in the 4th inning, but was cut down at home plate looking to score the tying run on a single by Kanilehua Pitoy. 

 

SSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the 4th inning to bring the game to the final score of 4-2.

GAME 2 – WWU 10, HNU 8  Box Score | Scoresheet

 

The Vikings overcame deficits of 4-0 (after the 1st inning) and 6-3 (after the 3rd inning) to defeat Holy Names 10-8 in a 3-hour, 8-minute marathon in the late game of the day.

 

WWU scored three runs in the 3rd inning and four more runs in the 4th inning to take a 7-6 lead, before HNU tied it back up at 7-7 in the bottom of the 4th inning. 

 

Senior pitcher Kira Doan was masterful in relief allowing one run and two hits in 3.2 innings, tallying five strikeouts.

 

With the score tied 7-7 and two outs in the top of the 6th inning, Kinzey Williams reached on a fielding error by the HNU pitcher. Tatum Dow extended the inning with a single through the left side and Lauren Lo provided the bit hits with a two-run triple to right field. Dakota Brooks added an insurance run with a single to left field to stake the Vikings to the 10-7 lead. 

 

HNU brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning, but Doan got consecutive groundouts and struck out Celeste Pacheco to end the game for her 23rd career win (12th in WWU history). 

 

Lo finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI for her 12th multi-hit game of the year. Brooks (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Chantelle Shimabukuro (3-for-5, R, RBI) also had three-hit games as the Vikings recorded a season-high 18 hits.

 

Carly Hillenbrand (0-2) suffered the loss for Hawks allowing four hits and three runs (0 ER) in one inning of work. Catcher Lyndsey Widner went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead HNU at the plate.
