BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The No. 10 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Puget Sound on Thursday at Harrington Field.
The Vikings got off to a 1-0-0 start to the season behind an early goal from freshman
Morgan Manalili in the third minute (2:02) and a late goal on a volley by junior
Ellie Busik in the 78th minute (77:23).
The Vikings shutout featured defenders
Asia Hardin and
Katie Watt logging the full 90, with goalkeepers
Abigail Trengove (65 minutes) and
Grace Wales (25 minutes) combining for five saves in the shutout.
"We continue to take steps forward," said WWU head coach
Travis Connell. "We were able to add a couple more players into our attacking movements today and are creating goal scoring chances in many different ways. Looking forward to our next match on Tuesday."
WWU out-shot UPS 23-10, with each team putting six shots on frame.Â
The game was the season opener for WWU, but played as an exhibition match for the Loggers, who went 16-2-2 during the 2021 season.
