BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Northwest Nazarene University Thursday evening in front of 531 fans at Harrington Field.

 

The Vikings dropped to 2-4-3 overall and 0-2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with the one-goal defeat. After opening the season 2-0-1, WWU has gone 0-3-2 in its last five games. NNU improved to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in GNAC play.

 

The Nighthawks got on the scoreboard first in the 28th minute when Jhonny Ramirez connected on a powerful shot following a blocked shot by the Vikings defense.

 

NNU went up 2-0 just over 15 minutes into the second half when Jonathan Cardona was fouled in the 18-yard box by WWU goalkeeper Charlie Dyer. Cardona converted from the spot to the lower left corner for his second goal of the season.

 

WWU closed the gap to a one-goal deficit in the 85th minute when senior midfielder Adan Fernandez connected off a pass from junior winger Albin Jonsson from just outside the box.

 

Western held a decisive 23-4 advantage in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. WWU also had 15 corner kicks compared to just one for NNU.

 

The Vikings (2-4-3, 0-2-1 GNAC) is back on the road Saturday with a GNAC contest against Saint Martin's University in Lacey with kickoff scheduled for 3:45 pm. The complete 2024 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/24_MSOC.

The Western Washington University men's soccer program is led by head coach Greg Brisbon, who has spent over 20 seasons affiliated with WWU Soccer. The Vikings won the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, the third league trophy in program history, and advanced to the NCAA II Championships for the second time. The program completed its 44th varsity season in 2023 and has recorded a season record at or above the .500 mark in 11 of the last 12 seasons. In 2016 the Vikings advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in program history, using a late-season surge that saw the Vikings 5-0-1 over the last six matches to advance to the postseason. Overall the program has produced 63 GNAC Players of the Week selections, 30 First Team All-GNAC players and four GNAC Players of the Year since joining the conference in 2001. Off the field, WWU has built a strong academic reputation with 82 GNAC All-Academic selections over the last seven years.
