BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Senior midfielder Lucas Hakamada scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute on a diving header to lead Western Washington University to a 1-0 victory over Saint Martin's University Saturday at Harrington Field.
WWU extended its winning streak to six consecutive games improving to 8-4-3 overall and remaining in sole possession of second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 19 points (6-2-1). The Vikings are making a late season push for the postseason with just three regular-season games remaining in the 2024 season.
The Vikings and Saints were stuck in a scoreless battle until the opening moments of the 76th minute. Freshman Reiley Buri-Brown took a free kick sending the ball out wide to senior defender Jacob Sundberg, who created a little space and whipped a cross into the box from 40 yards out. Hakamada connected on a diving header from 10-yards out for his second goal of the season.
SMU had a chance to equalize in the 80th minute, but Western goalkeeper Charlie Dyer denied the shot of Ethan Jud punching the ball over the crossbar for his lone save of the night while recording his third shutout.
The Vikings held a 19-5 advantage in total shots and 4-1 in shots on goal. Saint Martin's dropped to 0-15-0 on the season and 0-9-0 in GNAC play.
"A good result for the team today. At this point in the season it is important to get three points at home," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon, who now has 101 career head coaching wins. "Credit to Saint Martin's…they put a lot of players behind the ball and made it very difficult in the final third. But credit to my team today as they kept at it and found a way to score of a great goal. We will try to get some rest and get ready for Simon Fraser on Thursday."
The Vikings (8-4-3, 6-2-1 GNAC) have another two-game week on tap hosting border rival Simon Fraser on Thursday at 5 pm at Harrington Field and travel to play Montana State Billings to complete the penultimate week of the regular season on Saturday (6 pm MT). The Western Washington University men's soccer program is led by head coach Greg Brisbon, who has spent over 20 seasons affiliated with WWU Soccer. The Vikings won the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, the third league trophy in program history, and advanced to the NCAA II Championships for the second time. The program completed its 44th varsity season in 2023 and has recorded a season record at or above the .500 mark in 11 of the last 12 seasons. In 2016 the Vikings advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in program history, using a late-season surge that saw the Vikings 5-0-1 over the last six matches to advance to the postseason. Overall, the program has produced 63 GNAC Players of the Week selections, 30 First Team All-GNAC players and four GNAC Players of the Year since joining the conference in 2001. Off the field, WWU has built a strong academic reputation with 93 GNAC All-Academic selections over the last eight years.
