BURNABY, B.C. – In a battle of the top two teams in the GNAC standings, the No. 14 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team defeated No. 19 Simon Fraser University 3-2 on a rainy Saturday evening at Terry Fox Field at SFU Stadium.
The Vikings extended their winning streak to six consecutive games improving to 9-1-3 overall and gained sole possession of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference table at 7-0-1 (22 points). WWU is undefeated in its last 10 games (9-0-1) and dating back to the end of the 2023 season is unbeaten in its last 23 conference games (19-0-4).
Previously unbeaten Simon Fraser recorded its first loss of the season dropping to 9-1-2 overall and 6-1-1 in GNAC play.
For the second time in as many games the Vikings struck within the first five minutes of the game to go up 1-0. Senior Claire Potter set up Morgan Manalili for a right-footed strike at the 4:32 mark. Senior Kascia Muscutt had a long throw-in into the 18-yard box with Potter's initial cross attempt blocked, but her second found her senior teammate Manalili who scored from 9-yards out for her conference-leading 10th goal of the season.
WWU added two more first-half goals separated by just over three minutes to extend the lead to 3-0. In the 25th minute Potter scored on a flick-on header off a pass from Manalili. Just over three minutes later senior set-piece specialist Emily Rice curved a left-footed corner kick into the goal for her second goal of the season. In wins over NNU and SFU this week, Rice recorded a goal and two assists.
SFU got a goal back just prior to the halftime break when Kiera Scott scored from 20 yards out with a long-distance strike from outside the 18-yard box into the upper right corner of the goal. The goal was the eighth of the season for Scott, trailing only Manalili for the GNAC lead.
The Red Leafs made it a one goal game with just over six minutes left in the game on a goal by Abby Simpson. The goal sequence featured a fleury of offensive activity by the Red Leafs with WWU freshman goalkeeper Ellie McGowan making a pair of saves prior to the Simpson goal on a header off an Alyssa Clark corner.
McGowan made four key saves for the Vikings who had allowed only two goals in the previous seven conference games.
The Vikings offense has scored at least three goals in each of the last six games and leads the GNAC with 24 goals in eight games (3.00 goals per game).
The Vikings (9-1-3, 7-0-1 GNAC) remains on the road next week with GNAC contests at Saint Martin's on Thursday in Lacey (2 pm) and Saturday evening at Western Oregon in Monmouth (7 pm). Both games will stream live via pay-per-view on the GNAC Network. The complete 2025 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/25_WSOC.
