Vikings Fall to No. 21 Colorado Mesa 65-62

WWU holds 4th quarter lead but falls to No. 21 Mavericks down the stretch

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team dropped its 2025-26 season opener against No. 21 Colorado Mesa University, 65-62, in a tightly-contested non-conference game at the D2 Canadian Tip-Off Classic.

 

The Vikings (0-1) held a 61-55 lead over the nationally-ranked Mavericks following three free throws by senior Anna VanderYacht. Colorado Mesa took control of the game after trailing by six points, ending the game on a 10-1 run to secure the three-point victory over WWU.

 

Western junior guard Libby Stump led all players with 22 points on 9-for-19 shooting, also contributing six steals, five assists and four rebounds. Senior transfer Olivia Hodges had a strong debut as a Viking recording a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double. Senior forward Aspen Garrison added 10 points on in 21 minutes of action.

 

The Vikings and Mavericks were tied 32-32 at the half, despite CMU leading by 12 points with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter (26-14). WWU went on an 11-0 scoring run to pull back into the game and out-scored the Mavericks 18-6 to level the halftime score.

 

WWU led by as many as seven points midway through the fourth quarter, prior to Colorado Mesa's strong finish for the three-point victory. The Mavericks (1-0) were led by at 15-point, 16-rebound double-double from 2024-25 RMAC Player of the Year Olivia Reed.
