Vikings Win Battle of Top 25 Teams

WWU defeats Western Oregon 3-0 in fifth consecutive shutout

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a battle of two nationally ranked programs, the Western Washington University women's soccer team topped Western Oregon University 3-0 Thursday night at Harrington Field.

The No. 21 Vikings extended their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games (6-0-1) while logging their fifth consecutive shutout to improve to 6-1-3 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play. WWU is tied for first place in the GNAC table with 13 points to match Simon Fraser. No. 12 WOU had its school record six-game winning streak snapped to fall to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in GNAC play.

Playing just its third home games of the season at Harrington Field, the Vikings improved to 3-0-0 in games played in Bellingham with the dominating performance against the Wolves.

"Tonight was an important win for us," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "We will learn from this game and start preparing for Saturday as we host Saint Martin's."

WWU opened the scoring in the 16th minute on a converted penalty kick by GNAC leading scorer Morgan Manalili (9th goal). Manalili was led to the spot after Emily Holdridge was taken down to the turf by WOU goalkeeper Bella Lopez after beating her on a loose ball. Lopez was shown a red card and Manalili slotted her PK past reserve Xeyana Salanoa to give the Vikings the early lead.

Just over three minutes into the second half the Vikings doubled their lead when redshirt freshman Bayla Abraham scored her first collegiate goal off assists by Claire Potter and Olivia Connell.

With the game winding down, WWU made it 3-0 on a clinical finish by sophomore Audrey Holdridge into the top left corner with an assist to junior Jane Hmura.

Western's defense was led by defenders Connell and Asia Hardin, and midfielder Mie Cairns playing the full 90. Freshman goalkeeper Ellie McGowan made three saves to record her third shutout of the season.
