No. 12 Vikings Hold Off MSUB for 2-1 Victory

WWU extends unbeaten streak to 14 games (12-0-2) heading into final week of regular season

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No.12 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team inched closer to the GNAC title recording its 10th conference victory with a 2-1 win over visiting Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon at Harrington Field.

WWU improved to 10-0-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and 12-1-4 overall while remaining unbeaten over its last 14 games (12-0-2). The defending GNAC champions have already clinched an official berth in the GNAC Championships that features the top four teams in the standings November 13-15 in Burnaby, BC. Dating back to the end of the 2023 season, Western is unbeaten in its last 26 conference games going 21-0-5.

"MSUB made it really difficult for us today," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "I am encourage with how we responded to the challenge."

The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute to gain the early advantage. Senior defender Kascia Muscutt slipped a through ball to freshman forward Triya Mitchell, with Mitchell's shot finding its way through the legs of the MSUB goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.

After MSUB scored mid-way through the first half, the score remained 1-1 at the halftime break, with the Vikings putting consistent pressure on the Yellowjackets with nine shots and four shots on goal. Then 22 minutes into the second half, senior forward Claire Potter made a pass from the endline back to senior Morgan Manalili who shot it in the bottom left to score the Vikings second goal of the game and her GNAC-leading 13th goal of the season.

WWU held a decisive 16-9 advantage in total shots and 8-5 in shots on goal to earn the second win of the season over MSUB.
