IRVINE, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team put together a dominating all-around performance recording a 29-point 86-57 road victory over Concordia University Irvine on Friday at the GNAC/PacWest Challenge in CU Arena.
WWU improved to 4-2 on the season paved by a historic shooting performance, connecting on 34-of-51 shots from the field for a 66.7-percent shooting percentage. During the NCAA era since 1998, it marks the third-best shooting performance by a Viking team and the best since the 2004 season. The Vikings were 28-for-35 (80-percent) from shots inside the 3-point arc against the Golden Eagles.
The Vikings got off to a quick start with 27 first-quarter points and held a 43-32 halftime lead. Western's defense limited CUI to nine points in the 3rd quarter to expand the lead to 64-41 and finished strong for the 29-point victory.
Western featured four players scoring in double digits, led by a game-high 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting from junior guard Demi Dykstra and 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting by junior guard Joy Haltom. The 20-point game for Haltom marked a collegiate career best after playing two seasons at Portland State.
Leading scorer Libby Stump poured in 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting to increase her season point total to 17.5 points per game. Senior forward Olivia Hodges recorded a monster 13-point, 16-rebound double-double for her fourth game (out of 6) with double figures in points and rebounds this season. Hodges, a transfer from Cal State LA and Southern California native from Pasadena, is averaging 11.2 rebounds and 13.2 points per game for the Vikings.
CUI (1-2) was led by 13 points from Genesis Hopkins (3-4 FG, 7-8 FT) and nine points each by Myia Collins and Asia Darcuiel.
WWU held a decisive 44-20 advantage in rebounding, with Hodges (16 boards) and Haltom (6 rebounds) leading the way.
The Vikings close out play in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge Saturday at 1 pm vs. Azusa Pacific (2-2), a 75-59 winner over Seattle Pacific earlier on Friday.
