Vikings Sweep Doubleheader vs. Western Oregon

WWU defeats WOU by matching 5-1 scorelines improving to 4-2 in GNAC play

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 11 nationally ranked Western Washington University softball team swept its Thursday GNAC doubleheader against Western Oregon University by matching 5-1 scorelines.

The Vikings and Wolves had the second game interrupted by a 1 hour, 22-minute weather delay featuring rain, hail, snow and lightning.

The two wins improved WWU to 16-7 overall and 4-2 in GNAC play.

After securing the first-game victory, WWU wasted little time jumping out to the lead in the second game with a five-run opening frame sandwiched around the lengthy weather delay.

WWU's pitching and defense paved the way during the victories, with the pitching trio of Alli Kimball (6.0 IP), Joie Baker (5.0 IP) and Kaiana Kong (3.0 IP) combining to allow two runs in 14.0 innings. Western's defense did not make a fielding miscue in 57 chances in the doubleheader.

Senior second baseman Kanilehua Pitoy led the Vikings at the plate going 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI and senior right fielder McKenna Crum was 3-for-5 with a walk and stole three bases in the nightcap.

The two teams complete the four-game conference series Friday with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for noon at Viking Field.
