ATHERTON, Calif. – The No. 12 Western Washington University softball team recorded 14 hits to power past Menlo College 10-0 Thursday in a non-conference game at Wunderlich Field.
WWU scored four runs in the 2nd inning and six late runs to bring the run rule into effect ending the contest after six innings to record the shutout victory.
The Vikings improved to 21-8 overall and 3-1 on their current spring break trip to Northern California. WWU has won eight of its last nine games and is 20-4 since opening the season with a 1-4 record.
Sophomore third baseman Maleah Andrews continued her hot hitting going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, reaching base safely in all five plate appearances also drawing a pair of walks. Andrews extended her current hitting streak to 13 games (.683/28-for-41) and has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games.
Second baseman Kanilehua Pitoy (2-for-4, R, RBI), senior catcher Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez (2-for-4, R) and sophomore center fielder Laila Carpenter (2-for-4, 2 R, SB) also tabbed multi-hit games.
Senior starting pitcher Joie Baker was nearly unhittable scattering two hits in 5.0 scoreless innings to record the win improving to 8-6 on the season. Baker recorded seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Freshman Gracie Huston closed out the shutout with a scoreless bottom of the 6th inning.
Menlo College dropped to 8-22 overall while playing its first season at the NCAA Division II level in the PacWest.
