Vikings Fight Back For 2-2 Draw in Colorado Springs

Reese Walker and Olivia Connell score second-half goals for the Vikings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a hard-fought 2-2 tie on the road against the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.

WWU battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit scoring goals in the 61st and 83rd minute to start the season with a pair of ties.

"We showed a lot of fight today coming back from a halftime deficit," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "This team is starting to figure things out and there is certainly no quit in this group."

The Mountain Lions went up 1-0 with a goal in 31st minute just prior to a 30-minute weather delay due to lightning in the area, with Luka Johnson tucking a right-footed shot into the lower left corner following a failed clearance by Western and a short pass into the 18-yard box by Regan Dare. UCCS doubled its lead with just under two minutes prior to halftime when Abby Stassi fired a shot just under the crossbar for the goal.

WWU pulled to within one goal in the 61st minute when redshirt freshman midfielder Bayla Abraham laid off a pass to junior midfielder Reece Walker, who curled in her shot from outside the 18-yard box for her first goal as a Viking.

The Vikings found the equalizer in the 83rd minute off a set piece with a left-footed corner kick by Emily Rice finding the head of junior defender Olivia Connell, redirecting a shot into the lower left corner for the goal.

WWU scored a 79th-minute equalizer in its 1-1 tie Thursday in the season opener at MSU Denver.

Each team recorded 13 shots in the game, with Western holding a 7-5 advantage in the second half, and the Vikings edging UCCS 6-4 in shots on goal.
