Hot Start Fuels Vikings 16-Point Win Over UAA

Vikings complete weekend sweep of Alaska schools with 16-point victory over Seawolves

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Carver Gym defeating GNAC rival Alaska Anchorage 81-65 Saturday evening on WECU Court.

 

The Vikings led wire-to-wire, getting off to a quick start scoring the 13 points of the game, led 43-28 at the half and held off the Seawolves in the second half to improve to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play. WWU is 6-0 in home games in Carver Gym this season.

 

WWU led by as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, but UAA responded with a 21-7 scoring run to pull to within four points at 54-50 with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter. Senior forward Olivia Hodges ended the run with a three-point play and the Vikings controlled the remainder of the game pulling away for the 16-point victory.

 

Junior guard Libby Stump and Hodges tied for the game high with 21 points as four Vikings scored in double-digits. Junior guard Demi Dykstra added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists and senior forward Aspen Garrison scored 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.

 

Stump was 9-for-16 shooting while filling the stat sheet with five rebounds, four steals, three assists and one blocked shot. Hodges tallied a game-high 11 rebounds for her national leading 13th double-double. The Vikings shot 50.0-percent for the game (31-for-62) and out-scored UAA 46-18 in the paint.

 

The Seawolves (11-5, 3-4 GNAC) were led by 20 points from Mahaila Harrison and 13 points by Mylee Anderson.

SERIES HISTORY VS. ALASKA ANCHORAGE

The Vikings snapped a three-game losing streak against Alaska Anchorage with Saturday's 16-point victory. UAA won all three meetings last season including a GNAC semifinal win to end the Vikings season. WWU leads the all-time series 37-33 with a 19-12 record in home games. Over the last 12 meetings the Vikings are 7-5 against the Seawolves.
