No. 8 Vikings Net Pair of Second Half Goals in Win at SPU

WWU wins ninth consecutive game with 2-0 shutout win against rival Falcons

SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 8 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team continued its march towards the GNAC regular season title netting a pair of second half goals to defeat rival Seattle Pacific University 2-0 Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

WWU improved to 12-3-3 overall and remains in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with 31 points at 10-0-1. The top-ranked West Region team extended its winning streak to nine consecutive games and is undefeated over its last 14 games (11-0-3). With three regular-season games remaining, the Vikings have a six-point cushion in the standings over second-place Simon Fraser (25 points, 8-2-1).

The game was scoreless until the 68th minute when freshman defender Blake Francis scored her first collegiate goal that would stand as the game winner. Freshman forward Madeline Mays sent a corner into middle of the six-yard box that was punched by SPU goalkeeper Celia Ramos, but Francis chested the ball and sent a strong right-footed shot into the roof of the goal.

Less than three minutes after the go-ahead goal, the Vikings struck again with an insurance score to move the scoreline to 2-0. A Western throw-in bounced into the box with an SPU defender heading the ball directly to senior midfielder Mie Cairns, who volleyed the interception into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Western's defense recorded its 12th shutout of the season while holding Seattle Pacific to just one shot in the 90-minute match. The Vikings have allowed only four goals in 16 games for a 0.250 goals against average.

"We really grew into the game … the longer we played, the better we got. That's a testament to this group as they were really locked in trying to figure out how to gain an advantage against SPU. They started to solve problems and got stronger and stronger, and created good chances leading to the two goals," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "I am proud of the 19 players on the field tonight that worked so hard, and the entire team for how they push each other in practice. It's not just one player, but the whole team and their commitment to playing defense. Tonight was another good defensive performance."

WWU held a decisive 23-1 advantage in total shots with a 10-0 lead in shots on goal.

SPU goalkeeper Celia Ramos made a career-high eight saves in the contest. Haley Teofilo recorded the lone shot for the Falcons in the ninth minute of the game. SPU dropped to 9-4-2 overall having its six-game undefeated streak snapped and remains in third place in the GNAC at 6-3-2 (20 points).
