BURNABY, B.C. – The No. 7 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team had its 10-game winning streak snapped suffering a 2-0 setback on the road Thursday night against Simon Fraser University at Terry Fox Field.
Allowing multiple goals in a game for the first time this season, the Vikings had its undefeated start in conference play snapped dropping to 13-2-3 overall and 11-1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. It was the first loss for the Vikings in conference regular season play since late in the 2023 season, snapping a string of 41 consecutive GNAC games without a loss. SFU improved to 12-3-2 overall avenging its 2-0 loss in Bellingham earlier this season and remains in second place in the GNAC standings at 10-2-1. WWU remains on top of the table with 34 points heading into Saturday's final day of the regular season with the Vikings playing at Central Washington in Ellensburg.
After a flurry of shots to open the game by both teams, the Red Leafs struck first at the 14:04 mark when Alyssa Clark and Kiera Scott combined setting up a cross into the six-yard box that Sarah Caravatta placed into the back of the net getting her body in front of a WWU defender. The goal was only the fifth allowed by Westerns defense this season, snapping a string of 634 consecutive scoreless minutes.
Just over 10 minutes later, SFU played add-on becoming the first team to score multiple goals in a game vs. the Vikings this season. Midway through the 25th minute Scott pounced on a loose ball in the box volleying her shot into the back of the net from six-yards out.
WWU grew into the game in the second half holding an 8-5 advantage in total shots (5-0 on goal), but were unable to find the back of the net. SFU goalkeeper Sofia Piperni was credited with eight saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season.
"It was an uncharacteristic performance for us in the first half. I didn't do a good job preparing my group for this competition. We came out a bit sluggish, but played much better in the second half," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "Saturday' can't come fast enough for this because we are chomping at the bit to get back on the field."
The first-place Vikings (13-2-3, 11-1-1 GNAC) close out the regular season on Saturday with an 11 am game against Central Washington at Tomlinson Stadium. The seeding for the 2026 GNAC Women's Soccer Championships will be announced following the final conference game on Saturday evening. The complete 2026 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/WSOC.
WWU lost in a GNAC regular-season game for the first time since a 2-0 loss to Seattle Pacific on November 2, 2023 – a span of 41 consecutive conference games without a defeat (34-0-7) … WWU had not allowed more than one goal in a game this season until Thursday (4 goals allowed in previous 17 games) … in addition to snapping its 10-game winning streak, WWU had its 15-game unbeaten streak (12-0-3) snapped.
