ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team completed its Northern California road trip with a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay Monday afternoon at the Oakland Roots Training Facility.

 

WWU scored a pair of first-half goals and added a second-half insurance goal against the Pioneers (0-3-0) to improve to 2-1-1 on the season. The Vikings opened their two-game trip to Northern California with a scoreless draw Friday night against Cal State Monterey Bay.

 

The game was played on a near-perfect grass pitch on the outskirts of the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport that is used as the training facility for the Oakland Roots of the USL Championship and Oakland Soul of the USL W. The facility served as the training site for the Australian National Team during the 2026 World Cup.

 

"We played on a really nice field, and the great surface helped our game, moving the ball around and creating multiple attacking chances," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "We had some clicking happening on the offensive end which was positive. All around it was a good team performance to earn the victory."

 

WWU held a decisive 25-6 advantage in total shots and 15-2 in shots on goal. The Vikings also had 11 corner kicks and controlled the game with 69-percent possession.

 

The Vikings struck first putting a goal in the board in the opening 10 minutes freshman Chloe Van Wey scored directly off a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, curling her right-footed shot down off the crossbar for her first career goal. Junior forward Audrey Holdrige drew the foul to set up the scoring opportunity from Van Wey.

 

East Bay leveled the match with a goal midway through the first half at the 22:54 mark. Jenna McDonnell sent a through ball into the box that eluded a Viking defender, finding Kella Folkerts for a strong right-footed finish into the top quadrant of the goal on the Pioneers first shot of the game.

 

Western forged ahead in the 31st minute on a tap-in goal by sophomore forward Triya Mitchell. Freshman midfielder Keira Reeves found space down the sideline, cutting back into the 18-yard box for a strong shot on target that was saved by CSUEB goalkeeper Bianca Avila. Mitchell followed pounced on the loose ball slotting the ball into the right corner of the goal.

 

The Vikings added an insurance goal in the 67th minute off a give-and-go from Holdridge and senior midfielder Reese Walker at the 66:04 mark. Walker intercepted a pass deep in the East Bay half of the field that landed at the feet of Holdridge, who cut found Walker with a cut-back pass for a one-time right-footed finish from 10 yards out.

 

"Chloe (Van Wey) had a great game and was involved a lot in our good attacking movements," added Connell. "And Reese (Walker was super active throughout the game, with great movement in the final third helping create offensive chances."

 

The Vikings wrap up their non-conference schedule next Sunday (Sept. 13) hosting Colorado School of Mines (3-1-0) with an 11 am game at Harrington Field.

 

The Vikings (2-1-1, 0-0-0 GNAC) return to Bellingham opening a five-game homestand against nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, September 13 with an 11 am game at Harrington Field, prior to opening the 14-game GNAC schedule September 17 vs. Northwest Nazarene.
