BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Kristy Carstensen (Puyallup) had 16 kills, including 12 in her first 13 attack attempts, as AVCA/NCAA Division II No.11-ranked Western Washington University defeated UC Davis, 30-23, 30-27, 30-18, in match four at the 2002 Western Washington University Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Friday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Outside hitter Shannon Rowland (Sr., Bellingham/Meridian) and middle blocker Meghan Evoy (So., Olympia/Capital) each had 13 kills for the Vikings, who improved to 4-1. Middle blocker Cassandra Prell and outside hitter Kelly Gaudino each had eight kills for UC Davis, which fell to 4-2 and is 1-1 in the tournament.
The second game was the only close one of the match. Western led, 23-15, but the Aggies rallied with 11 of the next 14 points, six of them on Western attack errors, to tie the score at 26-26 before the Vikings scored the final four points, closing out the game on a kill by Evoy.
Carstensen had eight kills in nine attempts in the opening game as the Vikings never led by less than four after jumping to a 5-0 lead. In the final game, the score was tied at six before Western went on an 8-3 run to grab a 14-9 lead and gradually pulled away after that. The Vikings had a .486 attack percentage in the third game, getting 21 kills and only three errors in 37 attempts.
Setter Liz Bishop (Jr., Seattle/Mount Rainier) had 51 assists and five kills in six attempts for Western, and libero Nicola Parker (Jr., Auburn) had a match-high 16 digs.
Western plays twice Saturday, meeting Cal State Stanislaus at 11:30 a.m. and No.7-rated Brigham Young-Hawaii at 7 p.m.
UC Davis also has two matches Saturday, taking on Northwest Nazarene ID at 9 a.m. and Brigham Young-Hawaii at 2 p.m.
