BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Tessa DeBoer (Sr., Lynden/Lynden Christian) scored 22 points, 16 in the second half, and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as Western Washington University defeated San Francisco State University, 72-65, in the championship game of the seventh annual Western Washington University/Lynda Goodrich Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Center Jenn McGillivray (Sr., Salem, OR/S. Salem), who was named tournament MVP, had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who improved to 2-0 and won for the 16th time in 18 home regular-season tourney games.
San Francisco State, which fell to 2-1, was led by the 22 points of forward Cristal Fernandez. Center Chrissy Ridenour added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Fernandez scored 15 of the Gators' first 17 points as San Francisco State opened up a 23-14 lead with 7:56 left in the first half. But the Vikings used a run of 11 consecutive points later in the period to take a 32-27 lead with 1:37 left in the first half and never trailed again.
Western held a 34-28 edge at halftime. San Francisco State pulled to within one, 50-49, with 8:29 left, but failed to score again for over five minutes, and the Vikings ran off 10 straight points, six by DeBoer, to put the game out of reach.
The Vikings shot just 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field, including 1-of-17 (5.9 percent) on 3-pointers, but held the Gators to 36.0 percent (18-of-50) shooting and had a 49-32 edge in rebounds.
Guard Michelle Morgan had 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for San Francisco State.
Guard Devin Dykstra (Fr., Sumas/Nooksack Valley) came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six rebounds for Western, and guard Samantha Hubbard (So., Carbonado/White River) added four points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
McGillivray was joined on the all-tournament team by DeBoer, Fernandez, Ridenour, forward Martina Kartikova of Saint Martin's College and forward Tara Podpah of New Mexico Highlands University. DeBoer and McGillivray were each named for the second time.
In addition, Shelly Harder, a Saint Martin's player last season who is recovering from life-threatening injuries suffered in an accident this summer, was named an honorary all-tournament selection.
Western competes in the North Dakota State University Invitational Tournament on Nov. 28-29 at Fargo, N.D.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Forward Martina Kartikova scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Saint Martin's College defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 90-65, in the consolation game of the seventh annual Western Washington University/Lynda Goodrich Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Saint Martin's, which improved to 1-1, also got 18 points from forward Julia Eisentrout and 15 points and seven assists from guard Beth Layton.
New Mexico Highlands fell to 1-2. Forward Page Leatherman and center Tara Podpah each had 14 points for the Cowgirls.
Saint Martin's held a 38-36 lead at halftime and was up by just four, 54-50, with 13 minutes left, before running off 12 straight points to start a 25-3 run that gave the Saints a 79-53 lead with 6:54 to play. New Mexico Highlands got no closer than 21 the rest of the way.
Saint Martin's hit 24-of-32 free throws, and the Saints committed only 11 turnovers while the Cowgirls had 24.
Host Western Washington University (1-0) and San Francisco State University (2-0) play for the tourney title at 7 p.m.
