MODESTO, Calif. - Jodie Rock (Jr., Anacortes) drove in three runs and scored two, and Nancy Mills (Sr., Los Gatos, CA) pitched a shutout, as Western Washington University defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 8-0, in its first game Saturday at the Second Annual Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions being held at Rainbow Fields.
The contest was halted after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
The Vikings, who improved to 13-12, are now 2-1 in pool play. They meet NCAA Division II No.4-ranked UC Davis at 10:15 a.m., and host Cal State Stanislaus at 2:45 p.m. Single-elimination championship round play is Sunday.
Cal State San Bernardino, now 0-2 in tourney play, fell to 8-34.
Western scored four runs in the first inning and plated four more in the third.
Rock had a two-run double in the first and a run-scoring single in the third for the Vikings. Adrienne Moore (So., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) had run-scoring singles in both frames, and Hadley Jensen (Jr., Olympia) had singles and scored in both innings.
Mills scattered six hits to get the victory, evening her record at 3-3.
Jensen, Moore, Rock and Jessi Williams (Sr., Everett/Cascade) each had two hits for Western.
